Winter in Catskill

Anyone that knows me, knows full well that I'm not a winter person. I'd much rather be mowing a lawn or playing golf instead of shovelling snow. However, I have to admit that fresh snow can be very pretty. This week we had snow and ice, so the trees in the neighborhood are particularly nice, especially when the sun is shining through them. So I braved the frigid air and went scouting for photo opportunities. It was too cold...shot quick and got back inside where it's warm.

Here's a couple after some processing through Nik software. I think it makes plain white snow a little more interesting.

Winter Wedding - Jennifer & Chris

I had the great pleasure of photographing the wedding of Jennifer and Chris last weekend. It was the day after the big storm. Glad the storm got here early for their sake. But the new snow made for a pretty background.

As always, the folks at Anthony's Banquet did a fabulous job with the reception and Jessica Kozlowski cake was beautiful and delicious.

High Dynamic Range

Lately I've been playing with High Dynamic Range or HDR. For those of you not familiar, I'll use the definition from Wikipedia since it is much better than mine. "In image processing, computer graphics, and photography, high dynamic range imaging (HDRI or just HDR) is a set of techniques that allow a greater dynamic range of luminance between the lightest and darkest areas of an image than current standard digital imaging techniques or photographic methods. This wide dynamic range allows HDR images to more accurately represent the range of intensity levels found in real scenes, ranging from direct sunlight to faint starlight"

I took a ride to Maine on Friday to help my friend Gary move some furniture into his new vacation home. What a great place. Congratulations to you and your family. So after we completed our work, Gary showed me around the town and especially the ocean. We walked the Marginal Way around the beachfront and ended up at Perkins Cove. This is where I made this photograph. I then applied an oil painting effect.

Nice place to visit and I'm sure a great place the live.

We are preparing to celebrate their wedding in a few weeks, so we spent some time with them at Olana to capture some images that show their love. As you see, a very handsome couple. This Saturday I had the honor of photographing the wedding of Marcia and Phil. Sweet couple. This was only the second Greek wedding that I've photographed, but I have to say, it was beautiful. The couple, the church, the ceremony were all things to remember.

The reception followed at the newly build Windham Country Club. This club house and pro shop are a little over a year old. The members must be very proud, it's a gorgeous facility. Food and service were excellent. Great music that had the guests dancing all night. This party knew how to have fun!

What I Did On My Summer Vacation

Joannie and I took two weeks off, last week and this coming week. Last week we started painting inside the house getting ready for Jenna's wedding in October. We only painted it ten years ago, can't imagine why it needed it again?! But it looks great.

However, vacation shouldn't be all work around the house, so on Saturday, we, along with our friends Bob and Joan, went on a culturally stimulating adventure. We visited the Hyde Collection: Art Museum and Historic House, in Glens Falls, NY. http://www.hydecollection.org/

The current exhibition is a collection of work by famed French impressionist painter, Edgar Degas. Most of his work was inspired by the music and musicians of his day. Along with the museum, we took a tour of the Hyde personal residence and had the opportunity to see the extensive collection of classic European and American artists. Visit the website to see all the works in their collection. Better yet, take the drive up and see it first hand. Its an amazingly beautiful experience.

After a nice dinner on Broadway in Saratoga Springs, we went to the Saratoga Performing Arts Center to listen to the Philadelphia Orchestra performing the music that inspired Degas' art.

Now for the best part. While we could not take photographs in the Degas exhibit, we were allowed non flash photos in the Hyde residence. I call this piece, CHRIST AND BOB WITH ARMS FOLDED. Fruits of Summer

Ok, so they could be vegatables, but we picked these peppers from our potted garden. Love the colors of red and green mixed throughout. But, I like the timeless look of black and white. It's nice to have a choice. Enjoy, by time you read this, they'll be giving me agita. Agita: Heartburn, acid indigestion, an upset stomach or, by extension, a general feeling of upset. The word is Italian-American slang derived from the Italian "agitare" meaning "to agitate."

The only things liking this rainy weather is ducks and flowers. We have two braided hibiscus plants at the front entry of our home. They have been beautiful all summer long. Not a bad investment of $15.00 from Sam's Club.

I really like how the color of the flower picks up the color from the Liberty Belle across the street.

Congratulations Maria Elaina and Frank on your wedding. Beautiful couple, beautiful family and a day sent from heaven. Rip Van Winkle Country Club, http://www.rvwcc.com/ was the setting for their outdoor ceremony. Set at the foothills of the Catskill mountains, this scene was straight out of a movie. This was a fun wedding with lots of dancing to music provided by Karoke Craig, http://www.karaokecraig.com/. It's great to see kids of all ages on the dance floor.

The center of the reception was the DELICIOUS food from the folks at RVWCC, topped off with a gorgeous wedding cake from HARTMAN'S KAFFEEHAUS in Round Top and a dessert table to please anyone's sweet tooth.

On Saturday, we celebrated the marriage of my niece Kristen and Rick. Thunderstorms and heavy rains could not dampen this wonderful day. Two very large families coming together as one. Quadricentennial Flotilla

So we had a little excitement last Thursday, when a flotilla of ships sailed up the Hudson River into Catskill to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the day that Henry Hudson first sailed up the river to explore trading opportunities. http://www.exploreny400.com/

As part of the prize packages for the 2009 Miss Greene County and Miss Greene County Teen pageant, both Michelle Suttmeier and Brittany Smith won a photographic portfolio package. So for the past two weekends, I've been working with them on some of their photos. Now, I can only shoot, I don't do hair and makeup, thank God. This past Saturday night was the second Saturday stroll on Main Street in Catskill http://www.catskillny.org/. Joannie and I had dinner at 355 Cafe http://cafe355.com/, great meal and their 1st anniversary of being open. Congratulations Jeff and Eddie, we wish you continued success. And thanks for a dry place to wait out the rain!

After dinner we went up to Doubles II http://doubles2.com/. There were a few musicians in there jamming away. It's always fun to listen to live music. Later on latin dance music was provided by DJ Zeffi Zeff. Again, good music, fun crowd and a light show that's not seen in many places around here. Nice job Mike and Sam.

One of the friends that I always think about when I hear this song is Jeff Brisbin, http://www.myspace.com/jeffbrisbin . Jeff and I worked together at Radio Shack about 30 years ago. After we both went on to different careers, we lost touch, got together 15 years later, lost touch again and another 15 years got back in touch with each other. When you have a real friend, time doesn't matter, it seems like we spoke every day.

Ok, so why am I blogging this? Last night Joannie and I got the idea to drive to Saratoga Springs, NY to Gaffney's on Caroline Street, to see our friend Jeff perform in the outdoor courtyard (sorry Joe C., it wasn't planned but now I have your phone number and next time we will plan this properly). We arrived unannounced, took two days to find a place to park, but got there in time to listen to Jeff's last set. If you haven't been to Gaffney's to hear Jeff, do yourself a favor and get there. Great original music, great covers of songs we all know and love. Gaffney's is a cool place with an outdoor patio perfect for a cocktail and great entertainment.

This Old House

Just before Thanksgiving, Joannie decided she'd like to use the reciprocating saw to remove the wall between our living room and what was my office. After a great dinner at La Conca d'Ora on Main Street in Catskill, Joannie and I joined hundreds of festive folks on Main Street to watch the Parade of Lights and the Christmas Tree lighting. The weather was perfect, the crowd was excited and the parade was beautiful. It's great to see our perfect little village living up to it's title as one of the top 10 towns in the USA. Thanks to the fire department, the business owners, the village officials and everyone who made this event so much fun.

Catskill, New York, November 11, 2008: This past weekend the top finalists for the 1st Annual MISS GREENE COUNTY/MISS GREENE COUNTY TEEN 2009 pageant competed to win the title of MISS GREENE COUNTY 2009 & MISS GREENE COUNTY TEEN 2009. Founded and independently owned by Astara Enterprises, this competition defiantly wowed the audience, judges and everyone involved. The intensity of the pageant started on Saturday evening during the Preliminary Evening Gown and Event Wear Competition and kept going all the way up to the crowning of MISS GREENE COUNTY 2009 and MISS GREENE COUNTY TEEN 2009 on Sunday afternoon. Emcees for the weekend were co-owner of Astara Enterprises Danielle Teresa Lanuto and 98.5LiteFM’s Michelle Taylor. The top finalists that competed were Meghan Baxter, Drew Bradford, Bianca Cancel, Amanda Cettina, Kaylee Marie Milller, Maria Cullington, Marchella Frascello, Casey Leigh Mabee, Samantha McArthur, Samantha Mead, Katie Riley, Tess Robinson, Rebecca Lynn Ross, Brittany Smith, Michelle Suttmeier and Danielle Szajer.

The finalists began their competition on Friday evening with rehearsals in preparation for Saturday and Sunday’s big event. During rehearsals the ladies got a chance to get to know each other, staff and the owners of Astara Enterprises. One of the finalists said that it was a memorable experience and she gained so many new friends that she would have never of met if it weren’t for competing in the pageant. Saturday afternoon each finalist participated in one on one interviews with each of the judges, had more rehearsals and then got ready for the competition to begin at 7pm. The MISS GREENE COUNTY/MISS GREENE COUNTY TEEN 2009 Pageant took place at the Scarlet Lounge in the Friar Tuck Resort, Spa and Convention Center to a packed house of audience members for both days of the competition. Family and friends were very excited to see their young ladies compete in such a prestigious event and were anxious to see who was going to be the first to win. On Saturday evening immediately following the Preliminary Evening Gown and Event Wear Competition the MISS GREENE COUNTY Organization awarded Michelle Suttmeier with the Interview Award, Meghan Baxter with the Style Award, Tess Robinson as MISS Photogenic 2009, and Casey Mabee as MISS Congeniality 2009.

Sunday afternoon began the Final Competition. This consisted of Evening Gown and on stage interviews with each contestant in front of a live audience. The questions were randomly picked by each finalist and consisted of questions created by the judges and staff. After hearing all the ladies speak, the judges decided the top three finalists for MISS and TEEN. Those three young ladies had another chance to answer a question on stage. Following this the winners were announced:

1st Runner Up for MISS GREENE COUNTY TEEN 2009 is Tess Robinson from East Windham, NY. 1st Runner Up for MISS GREENE COUNTY 2009 is Drew Bradford from Catskill, NY. MISS GREENE COUNTY TEEN 2009 is Brittany Smith from Earlton, NY. MISS GREENE COUNTY 2009 is Michelle Suttmeier from Round Top, NY.

Today's topic is flowers. I recently shot a wedding for Serena and Dan and their florist was Douglas Koch. Douglas is highly regarded in the flower industry for his beautiful and creative displays. Not only are they extremely creative and talented, but I had a blast working with them throughout the day.

It's the end of October but today the weather was beautiful. Sunny and warm, the day after a torrential rain storm. I spent the early morning shooting an engagement portrait for Rachael and Mike. Lots of fun, great couple that's getting married next year. Mike's family owns Story's Farm on Rt. 32 in Catskill. If you're looking for farm fresh produce, that's the only place to go. I picked up some incredible mushrooms and some fresh picked brussel sprouts.

On the way home, I went looking for some landscapes. I ventured down Mossy Hill road and found the creek that feeds High Falls. Unfortunately, I was above the falls, not knowing how to get below them. The water was screaming down due to all the rain we had yesterday. Pretty dramatic scene. I met Bob Ricketson. I can always tell another photographer when their first question is about the equipment. Bob immediately recognized I was shooting with Canon equipment by the red ring around my L lens. Early Morning Fog

Up early this morning, turned on The Weather Channel and heard that it was foggy this morning. So I grabbed my camera and headed down to the Hudson River to see if there was anything interesting. As expected it was very quiet along the river, one lone boat out on the water, one man drinking his morning cup of coffee while reading the paper and the gulls hanging out on the docks waiting for the sun to burn through the fog and take the chill from the air. I could have stayed there all day. But reality set in and I had to come home and get to work.

Catskill Studio Tour

Tonight was the night. The first annual Catskill Studio Tour. I was displaying photos at The Muddy Cup along with work by Dara Young and Lex Grey. Dara spent the afternoon painting in the front window of the coffee shop, later, I came down and set up a street studio and shot a few photos of passersby. All in all, it was a quiet night on Main Street, perhaps by time I got there, folks were already tired out. But it was a beautiful night to be out and I thank those who stopped by to see the gallery and to say hello. "The Muddy Cup at 410 Main Street Catskill captures the sharing creative musings of a life in Catskill for the Open Studios. These four artist are active participants in the Village's flavor and lure. Jim DiPerna, documents life in Catskill as a native with an eye of extreme sensitivity to the beautiful subtleties of the lives and land that define place. Lex Grey opens minds and hearts with her lust for life in a "renaissance" embrace of media and voice.
Hillary Manning has shared her talents in the arts tirelessly for years; helping to revitalize the walls of town with art. Afternoon with Stettner

The entire summer has gone by and I almost didn't get a chance to spend any time with my friend and mentor, Louis Stettner, http://www.loustettner.com/ . Lucky for me, we were both free this past Saturday afternoon, so I spent some time with him at his home and studio. Louis had spent the previous week working on his photography, so we spent a few hours processing many rolls of black and white film. Since I've started shooting digitally, I haven't been in a conventional darkroom in years. It was fun to get back in there and get wet again. Louis has his own methods for processing film that were new to me and an honor to learn.

Louis is also an accomplished painter and sculptor. We spent some time in his painting studio discussing his recent work and some up coming shows. It is always a pleasurable learning experience when ever I share time with my friend. His work, thoughts and visions are enlightening and inspiring. Thank you Louis.

Landversicht Family Portrait

So let's start this out by saying, WOW Triplets!?!? Colleen, Kenny and their beautiful triplets were the subject of today's portrait session. What a beautiful family. My daughter and I travelled to their house and spent the morning following the children as they laughed and played in their backyard. Eventually, they got used to me enough to all sit down for this family portrait. My daughter Jillian had to jump up and down and act silly, far from her normal character, NOT!, but the children loved it and it shows. Great smiles.

Both my girls wanted me to send out a special thanks to Colleen. As their teacher in high school, Colleen's dedication to her profession and to her students, has inspired both my girls to become teachers. An honorable profession and you get the summer off!

Thanks again Colleen and Kenny, I hope you had as much fun as we did today!

I know this posting is late, but I've been waiting for media releases from the school before I posted any photos. I'm still waiting, but in the meantime, let me tell you that if you missed this performance, you missed a lot. This is by far, my favorite high school play in many years. The story line was great, the casting was perfect and the performances, costumes, make up, props and music were out of this world. Into the world of Dr. Seuss in fact. Anyone who remembers these childhood stories would recognize all the characters as they tell the tale of Horton discovering the Who's on a speck of dust. Congratulations to the cast for a wonderful performance, to Mr. G and Ms. P for great music and direction.

The only photo I'm going to post with this publication is of my daughter Jillian. I know she's got a release. She played the part of Amazing Mayzie and I'll be honest and prejudice and let you all know she was truly amazing!

Catskill Classic Car Show 2008

On Saturday, May 10, 2008 Catskill hosted its monthly Second Saturday Stroll. This month we were treated to a classic car and motorcycle show. About 100 cars and motorcycles lined Church Street and the parking lot of the Greene County office complex. Hundreds of people enjoyed the show, the fine spring weather.

Taconic Hills Prom 2008

Earlier this week my friend Gary asked me if I could come by and take a few photos of his daughter Samantha and a few of her friends as the got ready for the Taconic Hills Junior Prom. What started out as a few students, turned in to quite a crowd. I must say each of the young ladies was glamourous and the young men handsome. Each and every one was wonderfully polite. Hello all, great news! My daughter Jenna got the surprise of a lifetime in her Easter basket this weekend. Rob asked her to marry him. Everyone is very happy. The Golden Jubilee of Rev. John J. Murphy

Hundreds of family and friends gathered today to join in the celebration of Father John J. Murphy's 50th anniversary of his ordination into the priesthood. St. Patrick's Church in Catskill, NY was the site of this celebration.

Father Murphy, is lovingly called 'Murph' by all of those fortunate souls whom he as touched throughout his life. Father was ordained on June 1, 1957 at The Cathedral in Albany, NY and celebrated his first Solemn High Mass on June 2, 1957 at Saint Francis de Sales Church in Troy, NY.

For anyone who cares, Father Murphy was celebrating his first Mass at the same hour I was born. How lucky am I to have this in common with such a great man?

Father Murphy served our parish of St. Patrick's Catskill for 34 years from 1971 to 2005. We all love him and miss him. But most of all, we wish him the very best on this milestone of his life and dedication to serving the Lord.

Catskill Stroll - Celebrating Mother's Day

On Saturday, May 12, our village hosted another successful Catskill Stroll. This is an event that occurs every second Saturday of the month, when all the shops and galleries on Main St. Catskill are open for business. There's music, art exhibits, food and plenty of shopping opportunities.

At the Muddy Cup coffee house on Main St, I am participating in a three artist exhibit. I have photos hanging along side of visual art of Margo Pelletier and Darcie Cristello. Now that the holiday season is winding down, I have some time to get back to this project. A month or so ago, I met David Miles from Hood & Company, the newest addition to the growing community on Main St., Catskill. We agreed that when things got a little quieter, we'd work together in the new store. Well, today was that day. This time I also had the pleasure to meet Derek Hood. Now I'm not a detective, but I'd guess that it's his name on the door.

Derek and David are two great guys with a wonderful home furnishing shop. If you haven't taken the time to stop in, please do so. You'll be impressed by the store and happy, as I am to have met the both of them. Thanks guys for giving me the opportunity to make this image.

Capturing a Community

I've embarked on personal project that I'm calling "Capturing a Community". It is a photo essay of the Village of Catskill residents who have been a contributing part of our community. Some will be life long contributors and some will be new. So far, I have worked with Peter DiStefano of DiStefano's NY Barber Shop and Ray Rothrock of Ray's Appliances. I have several other individuals on the schedule in the next few weeks.

My goal is to have a exhibition at the conclusion of this project and if there is enough interest, I will look to publish a book.

I got a call a month ago from Jessica's mother looking to see if today's date was open to photograph her daughter's wedding. After meeting with Jessica, we agreed to work together to capture the joyous day. Well today was the day. Although there was torrential rain all around the area, the sky was clear and sunny over the wedding. I've begun work on a personal project involving angels. These are angels that are standing guard over the final resting place of the souls in the St. Patrick's cemetary in Catskill. They are so beautiful and peaceful as they provide eternal vigilance over the graves of family and friends.

Welcoming Spring

Seems like March had better weather than May, but in spite of the cold, Spring has sprung. The flowers are in bloom and everything is coming to life. Here are some photos that I've made while walking along the beautiful Hudson River shoreline. The robin's nest is located on the house along side of mine. Thank you Momma bird for setting up house where I could see.

Seems like forever since I've posted last. Spent the past three days in Boston on business. Nice city, but rainy and cold. This weekend will be very busy. On Saturday, I'll be covering the Catskill HS Junior Prom coronation at the high school. My task will be to cover the 'Red Carpet' arrivals of the prom attendants. As always, I will post the images a few days later for viewing and purchase. The profits for these sales will go to the Catskill HS junior class for their fund raising efforts. So make sure to tell all your friends and family to keep an eye out!

Also this Saturday evening, I'll be photographing a party for a long time business acquaintance. It should be an outstanding event. I haven't discussed the online posting with them yet, so for now I'll keep it private. But as always, keep coming here for the latest updates.

Each image has a size/price pull down. ALL PROFITS FROM THE SALE OF THESE PHOTOS WILL BE DONATED TO THE MUSIC PARENT-STUDENT ASSOCIATION.
